1878 Historical Atlas of Hastings & Prince Edward

Prince Edward County is rich with natural wonders and attractions – Lake on the Mountain, and Sandbanks Provincial Park are two of the more famous.

This place is also rich in history, as such we chose to resurrect an old name last used when Upper Canada’s first “Ten Towns” were first surveyed.

These ‘towns‘ were numerically named in the order surveyed, and once they got to ten figured they should name instead of number places:

First Town – renamed King’s Town (named after the King of Britian), now known as Kingston
Second Town – renamed Ernest Town (after the King’s 8th child), now known as Ernestown
Third Town – renamed Fredericksburg (after the King’s 2nd son)
Fouth Town – renamed Adolphustown (honouring the 10th member of the Royal Family)
Fifth Town – renamed Marysburgh (the King’s 11th child, Princess Mary)
Sixth Town – renamed Sophiasburgh (the King’s 12th child, Princess Sophia)
Seventh Town – renamed Ameliasburgh (the King’s 15th child, Princess Amelia)

The whole of Prince Edward County was originally made up of Fifth Town through Seventh Town, and renamed in honour of King George III’s son, Edward. Prince Edward went on and became Duke of Kent and Queen Victoria’s father.  [information taken from the Prince Edward County historical atlas]

PS: According to the 1878 Prince Edward altas [cover pictured above] our property at that time belonged to D. G. Murphy, who owned our little parcel [9+ acres south of the 'S' corner] and another 70+ north of the road for a total of 80 acres.
