Nuno Felting Workshop with Maureen Harding

Nuno Scarf - Georgette Silk 5mm

This past weekend I was able to take a Nuno Felting workshop with fellow fibre artist & Prince Edward County resident Lesley Snyder.  I had started my adeventure into the world of Nuno a few months ago but had reached at point where I needed the guidance of someone who has mastered the art.  Enter Maureen Harding of Dreampsin Fibres in Campbellford Ontario.  I had met Marueen this past summer when I took my first felting workshop “Felted Vessels” that Maureen was teaching at the local fibre shop Rosehaven located in Picton.

It was just what I needed I had reached a point in my felting adventure that even googling my dilema didn’t help me find the answer infact it confused me more, I was at the point that I needed the knowing touch of an expereinced and established Fibre Artist to look at my work, feel my work and give me her helpful advise, direction or praise.

During the workshop we felted 4 items 3 samples and 1 finished scarf.  Take a look at the results.  I am very happy with the flower scarf actually I was very impressed with myself.

2011 Events & Plans

patch - eye on you

Well I am sitting here suffering from a life sucking dull headache but work still needs to get done.  So I post and plan. Plan our events, farm happenings, 4H club stuff, fence layout & budgets for all.  It always comes down to the almighty dollar doesn’t it.

First event of the year at the Ranch is Maple in the County.  This year is the tenth anniversary of the weekend self guided tour that celebrates the beginning of spring and the flowing of the maple syrup in Prince Edward County.  Our first year on the tour was last year and it was a huge success people enjoyed the Pulled Pork & Ribs and were drawn to our place from all over eastern Ontario some were even pulled away from other eateries in the county (Milford) for the Ribs smoked up by Primitive Cuisine (aka Kevin, hubby, Pit Master)so mark your calendars because he is smoking things up southern style and maple inspired again on March 26 & 27 noon-4:00, but I do suggest you be here early because both days were sold out.

I have booked our Shearer Paul Morby to come out May 1st, 2011 it is exactly a month earlier than last years shearing which took place in June, but this year we decided that 1) no festival during our shearing (see reason later in post) 2) Shear earlier because it is easier to get the cold animals warm with a coat than a hot animal cool with a hose.

Last year we planned and held a big “festival” for which we had lots of people out but do to last minute changes some of our volunteers were unable to help this left Kevin & I more involved in the shearing than the festival, plus it was way too stressful for some of our animals.  This year we hope to have it video taped so we can put together a presentation/teaching tool for future events…  This year we will also have a 4H club that starts in March so the plan is to have the club help get all of the animals comfortable with halters, leading….it is hard for just Kevin and I to make sure everyone gets there time in halter and on lead so I know the club will be a great learning experience for us, the kids and as well the animals.  We plan on having a Natural Fibre Festival sometime during the May long weekend but this event is still in the early planning stage but stay tuned for details.

September Open Farm Days, an annual event that happens the last weekend of September will also include our 4H club’s achievement day’s and lots of interesting demonstrations so be sure to come out for that.

That is just a quick look as to what is going on here this year,  but as you know we are open for tours groups big & small by appointment or by chance so give us a call 613.392.5885

-30 at Seventh Town…Alpaca’s not liking it

Let’s be honest who other than maybe a Polar Bear like’s -30.  Beautifully bright here in Beautiful Prince Edward County but a might frigid and our animals are not liking it.  A couple even needed to be coated to help them keep warm, which doesn’t happened too often this winter but we are always prepared to help out a cold alpaca.
